The Chapel
21. Mar 2012 at 12:46

Before the existing Church was bought and converted into a pub, known, somewhat confusingly, as “The Chapel”, it was nearly bought to be used as a normal Church. How would people feel if the empty Church building was bought not by the CoE but by others who applied for change of use - back to that of a proper Church - with some facilities for the wider community?

I wouldn't use a church.  I would use a pub though. So I guess I would oppose it.

How would people feel if the Chapel re-opened as a pub?

I seem to remember having this debate and poll before!

The Chapel is under offer at present according to the receivers

Its future use is unknown to them but there is rumours of a pub / eating house run by someone from the village.

I wonder if the Chapel is large enough to become a multiple use building ?

It could be used for church services, but also have space for community use -  and how about a Village Club ?  (Licensed, of course !)

Seems ironic we should be discussing this again. Please see my previous comments on other threads when I explained it was offered to The Church free, several years ago (about 1994 ish) but they didnt want it!

Apparently it is too big for them to have  as a church again....seem to remember being told that it could hold up to 800 in a congregation!! Costs......blah blah

We could all worship in a 'Public' House instead of 'Gods' House!

And the upkeep was going to be prohibitive

The church was offered the building free in 1994ish............now that it has a new roof and is in the hands of a receiver the church would presumably have to pay the going rate of about £400,000 I believe.

I have it on fairly good authority, that the Chapel is being bought and the new (local) owners hope to re-open by mid May - great news if it's true!

Let's hope so.

I've heard all sorts, from a nursery to a creche to an adult learning and community centre, as well as pub, housing development, indoor climbing centre, small cookery school.  Undecided Huh

Crikey! ----wonder where the 'small cookery school' idea came from ------- made me smile -----the thought of Cotford's meal tables suddenly being decked with 'haute cuisine'; all the Cotford Wives queuing up in their aprons -------  Cheesy

I think 'Pub' is the most likely option ---- it seems to be a rumour with some substance-----and much more in keeping for those aforementioned Cotford Wives to have a cocktail glass in their hands than a pallette knife and whisk---------- Cheesy
