Title: Guitaraoke !!
Post by Colin on 03. Jun 2009 at 00:26
On thursday 11th June 2009 Colin from the Valetones will be running an 'open mic night cum sing along ' at The Chapel - just Col and his guitar and a few song books - come along and pick your favourite song and join in and sing along - better still bring an instrument and join in, better still get up and play and sing yourself. I'll be 'on stage' ( on my stool at the bar) at about 8.30. Hopefully I may be joined by Ray from the Valetones - so that's two of us already !
If this takes off we'll aim to run this on or about the second thursday of each month. see you there ! 8-)

Will there be a drum kit?

Title: Re: Guitaraoke !!
Post by Colin on 08. Jun 2009 at 19:47
No sorry, no drum kit at the mo. We've got to keep the noise down a bit, hence no amps either - purely acoustic to start with and see how it goes.
If this proves popular and hopefully becomes a regular monthly event, who knows we might start using a small pa and getting slightly noisier. :)

OK no probs, but if it does turn into a Jam night, I'd be well up for it.

Thursday was a cracking evening, thanks to all those that came and supported Ray and I - especially the silky vocal tones of John and Garthy - nice to see a few people dancing at the end aswell. Ray and my voices were a bit croaky at the end though - mind you playing and singing for about 3 hours does that to you ! The next one is on Thursday July 16th
Come along and join in ( and give me and Ray a rest !)  :)

Thank you, Colin and Ray for the most pleasant evening on Thursday! (only meant to stay for an hour but your music kept us there until well past our bedtime!!!) We will look forward to the next session of serenades on July 16th. Glad to know you plan to make these evenings a regular feature at The Chapel. :)

Steady on! Think of the neighbours - especially in summer when we've got the double-glazing open to try and avoid marinading in our own juices!  :P

Some of us work funny hours. Early to bed, early to rise and all that sort of malarkey.  :-/  :'(

Thanks to those brave souls who came along on the 16th Ray and I had a lot of fun playing - we even had groupies at the end of the evening ( thanks Kate and Kim xx )
The next one is on Thursday 20th August.
Had a couple people said they'd like to bring their guitars along and join in and have a go - so why not do it. Oh and promise we won't be very loud so the neighbours can enjoy their beauty sleep! (hee hee )  :)

That's nice - ta. Now, if you can just get the shrill women who hang around outside making parting noises until midnight thirty or later to shut the <<censored>> up, all will be tickety-boo!  :-X

Just a quick reminder that I'll be down at the chapel for another acoustic Jam night this coming thursday 20th August , hopefully again with my old mate Ray from the Valetones playing some songs old and new.
Please feel free to bring along your guitar or whatever other instrument you play and either join in, jam along or play something to entertain us yourself. If not just bring your voice and have a sing along. It's all very friendly and low key and none of the Britains got talent or Pop Idol judges will be there. Fun starts about 8.30 - 9.00 ish. come along and have some fun !  :)

Thanks for the kind feedback Folks. Ray and I also had a lot of fun playing for you last night. Great to see so many people enjoying themselves. Happy Birthday again Marilyn you were truly the Belle of the Ball last night. I take I hate peas' point about not knowing the event was on without reading it on the forum - I'll try and get it better advertised next time. we're probably going to give it a miss next month for Christmas ( we'll be playing with the full band on new years eve anyway so don't want to wear out our welcome) We'll be back again on or around the third thursday in January, no doubt with a few new sing-a-longs. ;)

Thank you, Colin and Ray!
You had us 'Rocking around the Christmas Tree' all evening.
Another great night in the Chapel with some of the Cotford Wives club all tinselled up and adding to the cheerfulness of the atmosphere (even loaning out tinsel to some of us not as well endowed!)
The Valetones always go the extra mile and serenaded us with 'White Christmas', without instrumental accompaniment, at the end of the night when all their gear was packed away.
Next gig - New Years Eve-----------!   :)

As there seems to have been much speculation over the preceding months as to my "live" identity I can only conclude that if you are convinced you have me taped then you must have barked as furiously up the wrong tree as every other speculator and on that basis I suspect I can safely say that I pity the poor surrogate candidates for my strutting embodiment the aggravation attendant to being misidentified as my substantially less-than-messiah-like and completely unworthy self is inclined to bring.

Then again, I've a nasty suspicion that I may have got a bit ahead of myself when I was in the pub with the guys the other week and you may have indeed got me bang to rights entirely by accident. If so, that exciting revelation - if confirmed - will, of course, drive the good Lady Marilyn up the plasterboard in fits of pique at being scooped, I suspect.

;D

Well, just between you and I, Colin, I think that the first paragraph wasn't necessary if Tempus felt he had let his identity slip as he explains in the second paragraph and something about that second paragraph doesn't fit with his elusiveness.

I think he will leave us guessing--------------- ;)

How do you know you haven't spoken to me? It's easy to know who Marilyn and Colin are because they use their given names and Colin puts pictures of himself in his shiniest shirt on here. ;D

I wouldn't have a clue whether I was talking to the physical presence of Nobody, HerInDoors, Brooklyn', Meldrew, TonyM, Grumpy, Zeralynx, Beanie, Mrs. Tiggywinkle, MuddyPaws, Villager1 (where's he gone anyway?) or anyone else unless they specifically introduced themselves as such - and pretty much everyone seems, like me, to introduce themselves with what it says in their passport and not their forum membership as a rule. I strongly suspect they wouldn't have a clue they were talking to me, either.

And so the game goes on...

That, Tempus, is a brilliant idea!  :)

I could not reveal on the Forum my nominated candidate's name as on his passport or as registered on this Forum as I would be afraid of contravening the Users Agreement re. divulging or trying to discover identities.

Therefore I will just change his name for my own purposes to 'Zorro' (this bears no resemblance to any member already registered on this web-site).

It is to Zorro I would make the award of being most like you in his mannerisms and  humour.   ;)

Colin, it appears we've taken this thread way off track but I wanted to remind everyone about the New Years Eve festivities at the Chapel on Thursday.

The 'Valetones' (aka Colin and Ray!) will be drumming out the old year and strumming in the new.  :)

Shaun and Kim are arranging the feast and it's a tickets only 'do'.

I don't know how many tickets are left but a visit to the Chapel or a phone call (01823 431587) will answer that query for you.

Party frocks and dancing, good company, superb food, farewell 2009 - welcome 2010!   :)

This brand new year was well greeted at the Chapel last night!  :)

The five-piece band, The Valetones, rocked and rolled us out of 2009 and into 2010.

A big thank you to Colin and Ray, on guitar and vocals, Phil and Bob on saxophone and harmonica, and the budding Ringo Starr (?), Rob the drum-master.   8-)

The variety of songs our feet couldn't stay still to ranged through the likes of Mustang Sally, Echo Beach,
and such rollicking numbers, culminating in 'Auld Lang Syne'. (spell-check couldn't help me!)

Thank you also to the backing singers, Vanessa and Liz -who were joined by the entire 'congregation' in the Chapel.

I really could have said all that in one word  --  "Wow!"  :)

The Purple songs might not work too well acoustically, same for the RHCP song - but might have a stab at the Pearl Jam number that 'll work acoustically

You're in luck, Henry - the pub offers a full range of non-alcoholic beverages to cater to all tastes as well as an array of falling-over waters.

Thank you Colin, it was another stupendous evening!

(I especially appreciated you playing my requested songs - they are special to me for their own reasons and having you sing them in the Chapel made them more special.)

It was good, too, to have a few numbers played for us by Jordan's band.

So a big thank you, Colin, Ray and Phil and Jordan.  :)

Aw shucks you're welcome Marilyn, sorry I missed a couple out that you and other people had requested - eg Cos I luv you, Alive, Nothing else Matters, Mandy etc. Will try and fit them in next time. It was great to have a few more musicians along this time to add variety to the evening ( and give my tired voice and fingers a rest ) glad everyone enjoyed it, thank you all for your kind comments.
We're back again on St Patricks night Wednesday 17th March doing a few special numbers in St Paddy's honour. We're also,I think playing at the end of the month as a leaving party for Collette and then we'll be back again on thursday 29th April. So make a note n your diaries, warm up your tonsils and dust down your tambourines etc. See you soon.  :)

Hi Anvil, yep definitely taking requests, although didn't manage to fit some of them in last time. Can definitely do 'Times like these' - in fact the band has recently added this one to our set list ( the loud version) i love the acoustic version and will look forward to doing it for you soon.  8-)

Thanks for the Craic, Colin.

So it's lunchtime in the Chapel at 12.30 and a proper Irish jig and sing-along session tonight!

Shaun and Kim are cooking a Lamb Stew and Soda Bread (with a glass of Guiness included in the price of less than £10)

See you there------------ :)

In Cotfords fair city    where the girls are so pretty
I first set my eyes on sweet Marilyn Malone
As she pushed her wheel barrow  throught the streets broad and narrow  Crying 'to the chapel to the chapel
Alive alive oh!'  (hee hee!)  ;D

(---would that I were in the likeness of she - but, thank you, Colin!  :) )

The others did meet her
And came out to greet her,
Saying "Off to the Chapel?
But why M. Mallone?"
She winked and she curtsied,
And said, " 'Twould be 'hurt-seed',
If guitars would be strumming,
While you're stuck at home!"

Then all of the people,
Looked yon at the steeple,
And cried, "We'll be gathered
With you, M. Mallone;
We've heard there is music
And food and great friendship,
So we can't have you jigging
In there all alone.!"  ;)

I encourage all who read this board but haven't ventured pub-wards to come and try it (the boys use acoustic guitars, not loud electric ones, so you can still be sociable). Colin and Ray,

"It's only Words; but Words are all I have-----"

Thank you so much for the stupendous Guitareoke evening at The Chapel last night!

You played all our requests, other songs which we hadn't asked for but you know are favourites (Summer of '69, 'Cos I love you, Angels) and 'Times like these' which is a song close to a few hearts.

Of course, 'Honky Tonk Women', 'Mustang Sally' and 'Hero' gave the 'wanna-be a vocalist' a chance to shine from her place on Centre Stage!  ;)

Another Rock 'n' Roll, rip-roaring evening --- thank you both so much.  :)   :)

Sadly we lost another village resident in a tragic accident this week, my condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to Lesley's family at this difficult time.

Elvis was in the building and sang some of his classics like 'The Wonder of You', 'Mustang Sally' and 'Hound-dog'; Colin and Ray had us dancing to numbers such as 'Hero', 'Chasing Cars', 'Summer of 69', and a batch of other favourites.

The atmosphere in the bar was, as always, terrific - friendly and fun! We are so fortunate to have 'Times like These' in Cotford.  :)

P.S. ---I almost forgot to mention that the benevolence of one of the party-goers earned him a special place on the dance floor where he was able to demonstrate his choreographic skills to rapturous applause------- 8-)

Her_in_doors and Colin,
You're really very kind,
About talented (!!??) performers,
(Can't think who you've got in mind!)

There may not be such high jinks,
On The Chapel's tiled dance floor,
As my relation due to marriage,
Is now in charge of Music Scores.

We answered Colin's advert,
Under 'Classifieds' on here,
And we think we have been chosen,
As 'sound and lighting engineers'.

So when Colin's guitar's strumming,
And it's 'Summer '69',
We'll be busy on the sound desk,
And we'll help the lights to shine.

No more mayhem at the mike stand,
When Sally's Mustang comes to town,
Or tambourine gymnastics,
To E.L.O's 'Don't Bring Me Down'.

----you'll know , though that I'm joking,

Wow! What a fantastic evening!

With the strumming of Colin's guitar the dance floor was packed; the sing-alongs included tributes to the birthday revellers; there was a guest appearance from 'Elvis', and a fabulously, friendly atmosphere in The Chapel.

It was another ordinary Thursday night transformed into an amazing Party!

Thank you so much, Colin!  :)    :)

Thankyou Marilyn and thanks also to everyone else who came along and supported this event lat night - never seen so many people there dancing and singing along. What a great atmosphere if you missed it you missed out.
Sorry to anyone who'se requests I missed out - I'll try and do them next time.
Following a great suggestion from Dave, for the next one I'm going to print off some lyric sheets to most of the songs and hand these out in a Chapel 'Hymn Book' so everyone can sing along.
I'll be playing again at the Chapel on Halloween night - see you there. Spooky !!  :D

I'm sure I didn't dream this-------

please could someone confirm if The Valetones are playing at The Chapel tonight (I'm sure I'd heard it was to a 'Blue Brothers' theme) and Elvis will also be performing as we ring out the Old Year and welcome in the New.  :-?

Title: Re: Guitaraoke !!
Post by Colin on 31. Dec 2010 at 13:47
Hiya Marilyn, yes The Valetones are playing tonight - we're doing a Blues Brothers theme in our first set with loads of songs from the two movies complete with black suits, hats n glasses. Then in our second set which will take us up to the magic hour there will be loads of party n dancy stuff.
We're playing from about 8 pm. Then there will be a set from The Elvis Experience and then we'll be back from about 11pm til finish with fireworks etc at Midnight.
I know the tickets are expensive - but you Don't have to eat - Shaun has relented slightly and also done an entry only ticket (come and enjoy the music - but no food ) for £15 on thr door.
There will be inflatable guitars, saxophones and Blues Brothers hats n glasses available so that people can join in and play along with us if they wish - see you there?  ;)

The news is that I've been really poorly with 'flu (cue floral bouquets, get well wishes, sympathy-----)  ;)

------maybe I just won't dance!  ;)

Title: Re: Guitaraoke !!
Post by marilyn on 01. Jan 2011 at 10:53

The Valetones were outstanding last night!

I really wasn't going to dance (as per my previous post!)  but their music enticed me to the floor;

it was a brilliant night with the guys performing as The Blues Brothers in the first half, Elvis rocking us with his music during their intermission, and The Valetones back with their mix of party melodies taking us to the arrival of 2011 with their rendition of 'Auld Lang Syne'.

Thank you so much!

(------and I even got to dance with the leader of the band!  ;) )

Happy New Year to everyone! xx   :)

Just read that through again and had to modify one bit-------'party melodies' is not really the right expression for the stomping, rocking songs like Echo Beach, Summer of '69, Jonny Be Good and a whole load more that got everyone onto the dance floor---- 8-)

Aha!! That explains the huge amount of noise until nearly 1am last night. It kept me awake from 11pm and woke my two young children twice. I'm all for people enjoying a night out but lastnights revellers were outside making an awful lot of racket, screaming, animal noises. Grrrrr! Please be considerate of the neighbours, particularly as it was a Thursday and people have to get up for work. It's not the first time and I'm sure it won't be the last.  :'(

Title: Re: Guitaraoke !!
Post by marilyn on 25. Feb 2011 at 18:33

Oh, sorry to hear about the disturbance last night, Youngfamily.   :(

We were a part of the last group to leave and were gathered in the porch of the pub at about 11.45pm. By the time we all parted and went our separate ways it was probably about 11.55 -- we arrived at our house just after midnight. (Certainly we just walked home and were not screaming or making 'animal noises' on the way!)

That is still an irritating time to be kept awake when you're trying to sleep so I apologise if we disturbed you and your family -- but if noise was going on until 1am it may have been a different group, not related to the 'do' at The Chapel.

If we were to blame in any way, I can only apologise and hope that we are more aware and considerate in future.

Title: Re: Guitaraoke !!
Post by her_in_doors on 25. Feb 2011 at 20:29
I would like to second Marilyn's comments both to 'the Legend' that is Colin for his fantastic music, humour and entertainment but also to youngfamily for any disturbance.  We also were home by midnight and although may have chatted and laughed on the way home, certainly no animal noises or screaming.  As Marilyn says maybe it was another group - possibly coming home from town or somewhere - but if the disturbance was in anyway caused by us, I sincerely apologise..I too have children and know how awful it is to not only have your own nights sleep disturbed but also that of your family.

Oh, the cosy feeling of coming home from such a fabulous evening------

The Chapel was packed with people----friends we hadn't seen much of in the eighteen months it was closed and many people we met for the first time tonight----- a warm and happy atmosphere------

---enhanced by the return of a popular feature----Colin and Rob doing Guitareoke!

Once again we were able to enjoy their music, dance and sing along to favourite songs-----

Thank you, Col and Rob for a great night-----and thank you Sam --------  :)

Reviving the "suggestions" theme, a blast from my past (or, at least, repeats of the Old Grey Whistle Test during what passed for my youth), before they became all "ker-chinky-chinky-chinky-chink" same three chords rearranged:-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_iTV-Jgw2u0

I gather that an additional challenge presents itself insofar as the Rossi part requires detuning the bottom string to 'B' (presumably from whatever it's meant to be; 'E,' apparently - according to an alcoholic Scotsman of my acquaintance who may, naturally, be talking out of his haggis) and thus the roadie should be ready to hand off a backup guitar at that point in the set list and be ready to swap it back afterwards.

Oh, and turn it up to 11...

8-)

;D

Oh,! I just noticed that you've already had a request for 'Pictures of Matchstick Men'------

----so please could I put in a request for 'Nothing Else Matters' ----? (Thank you, Col----)   :)

I understand you've got a guest guitar-player/singer playing alongside you through a part of the set----

Looking forward to tomorrow night-------   :)

It's not always just about the music------

Somehow, when Colin's playing away from our village, he has the knack of drawing those who are strangers to each other, together ---

----so it was in the Beer Garden at Halse last evening.

A perfect summer evening and the five of us from Cotford sat sedately --- until into the first couple of songs of his set.

Y'know how that strumming of the guitar, the lyrics to the songs have you wriggling so much on your seat that your feet can't remain still any longer no matter that you don't know the others on the dance floor----- well---it was like that! A guy who had the appearance that he had arrived on a surf board and was maybe of Australian heritage whisked one of us to the floor (and it wasn't me!) and led her in a sort of salsa through the song. That warm gesture was the cue for the rest of us to join in----

The 'Open mic night' revealed some talent from vocalists who came from Fitzhead and Halse and we were treated to favourites such as 'Summer of '69' (cheers, Col!!! :)), 'Brown-Eyed Girl',   'Hi, Ho, Silver Lining', 'Angels', 'The Wonder of You', ' 'Cos I Luv You' (and of course the 'My Ding-a-Ling' and 'Alice' sing-alongs  ;) ) ......... oh, a whole evening of non-stop music.....

----so---- too shy to say 'hello' to the groups at other tables on arrival, had us exchanging names and a promise to come there again on leaving-------

A great night ---- thank you!  :)

Thanks for your support again Marilyn - they've asked me when I can play there again  :)
Was a great evening and great fun to play with :) some very talented vocalists and musicians joining in with the fun.

---sometimes, if I'm at a loose end and need something cheerful to read, I thumb through 'old' topics on the Forum---

----and I can categorically state that this is one of a couple of threads that provides an Instant-feel-good-factor----

Those were the days; Guitareoke and Blues Brothers' nights were like a party-in-a-box-----once the lid was lifted it was non-stop music, singing, dancing----

---- did we ever properly thank you, Col and Ray (and all the band) for all the times you gave of your time and talents to entertain us----?

So often, good times fade from reality and become only memories------but those times built friendships which will not fade, those memories bring smiles which time can't erase------

Thank you........

Thanks Marilyn xx
Although as you know I'm hoping to be moving to New Zealand this year, I'm not gone yet (still waiting for visa etc to go through) so although the band has taken a break for the time being, I'm still available for Guitaraoke if anyone wants to organise one.
Also before I leave for new Zealand will be having a farewell party at which I hope to get the band together for (possibly) one last time, Watch this space  :)
xx

--- will see if we can organise something for a Guitareoke night, then, Colin---  :)

------ and that would be great if the Valetones could put on a gig before you leave for pastures new----- :)

Thank you so much ---- xx

Hi Colin
Good to hear from you. Chapel is still closed I'm afraid.
For the information of anyone who may wish to know, Richard Power's funeral will be at Taunton Crematorium on Wednesday 8th March at 3:30 pm. He will be greatly missed.

You cannot know what seeds you sowed in this village with those memorable Guitareoke nights, Col----

We got to know so many of our neighbours in the party atmosphere of those evenings and I am overwhelmed by the support my family and I have received through the many caring messages that have been sent to us by the community of Cotford in this past week----

Saying "Thank you" to everyone seems such an inadequate phrase at times like this ----

We will look forward to your visit in a couple of months----just don't forget to pack that guitar and there's a patch of parkland right behind The Chapel which would welcome the encore of some foot tappin' rock-and-roll----  ;) (---'coz we luv you, too!)

P.S. --- the flowers are as beautiful and fresh as the day they arrived ---

Coming back to the UK 30th June and staying for a couple weeks to visit family and friends. Will make a point of coming out to Cotford to catch up with everyone - will not have my guitar with me ( unfortunately haven't really played it much since I've been in NZ - pretty poor music scene here!) Be nice to see all the old crew and The 'Cotford massive' - is the pub open again now?

How lovely to come back from a little holiday and find that guitareoke (without the guitar so just the 'eoke') will be on the schedule in the next couple of weeks!  :)

We will be watching this space and so looking forward to seeing you, Col and Vanessa ----  :)

If I say that I've just had a phone call from circa  'Summer of '69' --- I'm guessing I won't be the only one in the Chapel from, say, 8.30pm, to welcome someone back to our shores------  :)
