I see sachets of shampoo are on the list. I've got loads of those I've acquired from various hotels so I'll drop them into the shop box during the week.

That's brilliant, Anvil!     Thank you!   Smiley

A Royal Marine was killed last evening whilst on foot patrol in the Sangin area of Helmand Province.

Not a day goes by without they are in our thoughts and we now add another family to our prayers.

How much more needless slaughter before the spineless politicians find a way of saving face and bringing our boys back home? Angry

There does seem to be a lot of it going on - but the news seems devoid of "their" losses. I can't imagine for one moment that Johnny Taliban is mowing down our lads like corn without consequence. I rather suspect that the reality is that for every one of ours that gets injured there's a whole squad of Taliban that gets theirs.

During the war the news reported not only ours but theirs, too. We got Messerschmitt losses as well as Spitfire losses. The equivalent today is just telling us the number of Spitfires shot down - can you imagine how demoralised the country would have become? Hitler might have launched Operation Sealion after all and we'd all be speaking German and wearing uniforms by Hugo Boss!

The venal media doesn't do us - or our servicepeople - any favours skewing the result, so to speak. I've more respect for Ross Kemp than a journalist, even though I think he can't act for toffee. I mean, I've never seen footage of a journalist screaming their head off, all pretence of being a hard man gone, whilst a squaddie kneels on him as empty cases fall all around and incoming rounds audibly crack past the microphone. I had to take my hat off to RK (and the troops, of course) for going out there - twice - and making his programmes because I sure as hell wouldn't have the bottle to go anywhere near the place.

Eleven shoeboxes boxes filled with assorted goodies and messages of support were posted to 40 Commando yesterday, thanks to all the donations made to the collection points at the School Fete and the Co-op shop.

Thank you to everyone for supporting this - we shall continue to send parcels weekly.

Thank you, also, to the Co-op and the School for kindly offering to host collection boxes.   Smiley

I could not agree more with you TF. After all a life is a life irrespective of nationality. Just look how the establishment now pay honour to the fallen of our erstwhile enemies of the second world war. How long before they are honouring the enemy dead in  Afghanistan? Perhaps one day they will admit to the slaughter that is taking place there, I have seen figures quoted of approximately 1000 to 1 of the allies killed there. Similar to what happened in Iraq!

It's getting to be one a week on average. How come we never hear how many of the bad guys our lot are slapping down? You'd think it would be politically expedient to say, "Well, we lost x this week but they lost x + y" along with this months tractor production figures and the rest of it.

Unless they think it will upset chunks of the population in cities like Bradford and Barnsley.  Roll Eyes

The box for the collection of items for packages to send to 40 Commando will be in Fledglings'  foyer now that the school is preparing to close at the end of this week for the summer holiday.  (Fledglings remain open for 4 of the 6 weeks' summer break.)

(The collection box at the shop will be there until the end of August.)

On Saturday September 11th** from 10.30a.m - 1p.m
there will be a Family Coffee Morning in the School Hall in aid of 40 Commando's Welfare Fund.

It will be like a mini-fete with stalls to appeal to everyone; cakes, plants and produce, books, bric-a-brac, face painting, lucky dip, treasure map, refreshments, and lots more.

Watch this thread for more details.

** The irony of the date arranged for this event hadn't occurred to us until after it was set ----- '9/11' - that infamous date that is now set in history-----and the reason our troops are in Afghanistan-----

Pansy has just told me that she has posted 25 parcels to 40 Commando this week!

So that's 36 parcels sent from this community since the Fete twelve days ago..............  Smiley

This week's donations of goods for 40 Commando at the collection points at the Co-op shop and Fledglings, resulted in a further 12 shoebox parcels being sent to them yesterday.

-----so 48 parcels sent since the 10th July!

Thank you, Pansy, for the contact you have made with the staff in the local shoe shops and your trips collecting the shoe boxes they have saved for you, for sorting and packing the goods, weighing, taping and labelling the parcels and getting them to the Post Office.  Smiley

Thank you, also, to the school and Fledglings and to the Co-op who have so prominently displayed the appeal for this cause and to everyone who has left gifts for our Marines.  Smiley
